How did Safety Matters get started?
Jennifer Richards, Owner of Safety Matters, LLC has been in the construction industry since 1987. She began her career as a Carpenter’s Apprentice and became a Journey Level Carpenter in 1992. After 12 years working in the field as a Carpenter, she transitioned from the field to a career in Construction Safety. In 2008 she started Safety Matters, a third-party Safety and Health Consultation Firm. For the past 10 years, Safety Matters has specialized in various Safety Trainings, Workplace Inspections, Accident Investigations and Assistance with Labor & Industries Disputes. More recently, Safety Matters has opened a training center in Seattle, and is expanding into the Southwest Washington and Portland markets.

Would you mind sharing a fun fact or quirky aspect related to Safety Matters?
With hundreds of different clients, our work often necessitates rapid wardrobe changes; going from a construction site, wearing mud covered Carhart’s, directly to an executive meeting in business attire. This represents our capabilities and the varying roles in our careers.

What is something of which Safety Matters is proud?
We are extremely proud of our ability to react quickly to customer’s needs. Whether it’s training, accident investigations, or drafting documentation, we are usually positioned to respond immediately when there’s an unexpected situation.

Why did Safety Matters decide to join the SWCA? How do you see us aiding in your business growth?
Safety Matters recently arranged with Mark Nelson, their VP of Operations, to open a training center in the greater Vancouver area. Nelson, a resident of Lewis County will be spear-heading this project; and after doing some homework, he is confident the SWCA is the right business partner to have.

Nelson works as an Authorized OSHA Instructor in both construction and general industry, so he is a great match for SWCA’s mixed membership. He also has a passion for assisting small businesses and feels right at home working in this market.

Thank you, Safety Matters! We are so excited to have you on board as members and to help you move into Southwest Washington seamlessly.
